The
Standard Process
For
self-employment
we attempt to
confirm business
ownership, current
or past, through
state or local
agencies. We
provide verification
information through
business license
registries or
professional
references, if
provided. If the
applicant was an
individual
contractor or
consultant we
attempt to verify
with a contract
agency if available.
Companies said to be
bankrupt
or closed
are investigated for
listings and
confirmation of the
company's status.
Many closed
companies have
offices that
remained open or
they re-open or
sometimes they never
really closed.
Income
verification
is of prime concern
to many clients ...
for example sales
applicants who claim
a certain level of
financial success
... and yet many
past employers will
not release income
information even
with a signed
release.
Some employers will
ask the applicant
for a copy of pay
stubs, W-2's, 1099,
or other income
statements. Others
find this practice
awkward as these
documents may be in
storage and not
readily available.
Or there may be a
risk of chasing a
great candidate to a
different
opportunity. Also,
care should always
be taken when
accepting
documentation
directly from an
applicant without
independent
verification.
Believe it or not,
there are companies
out there that
specialize in
providing fake
employment services,
including fake
W-2's, to job
seekers who are
having problems
landing a job on
their own merits.
